Sierra Leone Set to Receive First Batch of Deported Citizens from the U.S.

The Government of Sierra Leone is making preparations to receive its first group of deported nationals from the United States, following reports of possible deportations.

In response, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Sierra Leone, has convened a strategic meeting with key stakeholders to ensure a coordinated response.

Minister of Internal Affairs, Major General (Rtd) David T.O. Lengor, confirmed that the Immigration Department has already conducted preliminary interviews with some of the affected individuals.

He emphasized the need for a well-structured approach to manage their return in an orderly and professional manner.During discussions, stakeholders explored ways to enhance migration management and provide essential support to deported citizens.

Representing IOM, Madam Pauline Macharia clarified that while the organization is not directly involved in the deportation process, it remains committed to supporting returnees through reintegration opportunities at both individual and community levels.

IOM has requested detailed information on the deportees, including demographics such as age and gender, to tailor assistance effectively.

Madam Macharia reiterated the organization’s commitment to addressing migration challenges through targeted solutions, ensuring social stability, and prioritizing the psychosocial well-being of returnees.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to continue engagements in preparation for the arrival of the deported Sierra Leoneans.

The government, in partnership with IOM and other stakeholders, aims to facilitate a smooth transition for returnees, ensuring they receive adequate support to reintegrate into society.
