The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has officially denied a request from the Class of 2003 of the Old Princewaleans Association (OPWA) to parade a live lion during the Prince of Wales School Centenary Anniversary march past ceremony scheduled for April 6, 2025.

In a letter addressed to Patrick James Lewis, a representative of the class, the SLP acknowledged receipt of the request dated March 28, 2025, and stated that the matter had been reviewed by the Inspector General of Police. However, citing concerns over public safety, order, and security, the police declined to grant clearance for the live animal procession.

“In the interest of public safety, order, and security pursuant to Section 26(2)(a)(i) & (ii) of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone, the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) is unable to grant approval for the procession with a live lion in the streets of Freetown,” the letter stated.

The police further informed the Regional Police Commander, Freetown West, to ensure compliance with this decision. The letter concluded with an expression of appreciation for the understanding of the applicants.

The request to parade a live lion had sparked public debate, with concerns raised over the welfare of the animal and potential risks to public safety. The rejection by the police effectively puts an end to any possibility of incorporating a live lion into the school’s centenary celebrations.

Prince of Wales School, one of Sierra Leone’s most prestigious institutions, is marking its 100th anniversary with a series of events aimed at celebrating its legacy and contributions to education in the country. Despite this setback, the anniversary celebrations are expected to proceed with other planned activities.
