The President, His Excellency Brigadier General (RTD) Dr. Julius Maada Bio, on Friday, 16 January 2026, commissioned the first-ever National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT) district office in Moyamba Town, marking a key milestone in the government’s agenda to decentralize social security services across the country.

In his keynote address, President Bio praised NASSIT’s achievements, describing the Moyamba office as a testament to his administration’s commitment to bringing services closer to the people. “Social security is about the people,” he said, noting that the state must recognize the contributions citizens have made to national development.

The President emphasized that decentralization remains a key policy priority, explaining that district offices like Moyamba’s will ease pressure on Freetown while improving efficiency and service delivery. He also highlighted government efforts to ensure pensioners are trained to remain productive after retirement, and to empower citizens to invest and manage their benefits legally.

Speaking personally, President Bio described Moyamba as a district with a proud history and hardworking people, noting it holds special significance for him as the birthplace of his mother and, by extension, his hometown.

He further reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to people-centered governance, stressing that a responsive and accessible social security system is vital for protecting workers during their productive years and in retirement. “This building is not just about bricks and mortar,” the President stated. “It is about dignity, security, and the assurance that the hardworking people of this district and surrounding areas can access their social security benefits with ease and confidence.”

The Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, commended NASSIT and his ministry for completing the project. He described 2026 as a year of commissioning, emphasizing the government’s focus on accelerated action and development. The Minister also highlighted ongoing efforts to extend NASSIT services to the informal sector, including market traders, okada riders, and other informal workers. “We are introducing short courses for pensioners to enable them to continue contributing to the community after retirement,” he said.

The Director General of NASSIT, Mohamed Fouad Daboh, explained that the Moyamba office is the outcome of a presidential directive in 2021 to decentralize services. Moyamba was selected following research and consultations, he said, and acknowledged the support of the Minister and the President.

DG Daboh also shared a poignant experience that motivated the project: a tragic accident along the Bo highway involving a NASSIT cardholder traveling from Moyamba to Bo for verification. “This incident underscored the urgent need to bring NASSIT services closer to the people,” he said.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by government officials, traditional authorities, NASSIT board members, management and staff, and members of the public, all of whom welcomed the facility as a timely intervention to improve access to social security and pension services in Moyamba and surrounding areas.

The new Moyamba NASSIT office is expected to serve contributors and beneficiaries across the district, reinforcing the government’s agenda of inclusive growth, social protection, and people-centered governance.
