The National Revenue Authority (NRA) has taken decisive action to uphold tax compliance by sealing off the well-known St. Mary’s Supermarket located at Hill Station.
The supermarket was found to be in violation of Failure to Issue Electronic Cash Register (ECR) receipts and Impeding Tax Administration, as outlined in Section 155A of the Income Tax Act 2000 and Section 50(1) of the Goods and Services Tax Act 2009, respectively. These offenses carry penalties of NLe 10,000 and NLe 250,000, respectively.
The decision to seal off the supermarket came after the NRA’s investigation revealed that customers were not provided with proper receipts, suggesting potential tax evasion activities.
This enforcement action serves as a clear signal to the business community about the serious repercussions of tax evasion. The NRA has consistently stressed the importance of businesses fulfilling their tax obligations to contribute to the country’s development and infrastructure.
While the primary aim of this enforcement action is to prevent revenue loss, it also serves as a stern warning to other businesses engaging in similar practices.
The NRA remains committed to combatting tax evasion and non-compliance to ensure a fair and transparent business environment for all stakeholders. They have pledged to continue their efforts to crack down on tax evasion and maintain a level playing field for businesses across the country.
