In a strongly worded notice dated May 20, 2024, Nine past presidents of the Sierra Leone Bar Association have condemned the violence and irregularities that marred the Association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Kenema on May 17th and 18th, 2024.
In the letter is Signed by Charles Francis Margai, Francis Gabbidon Esq, Emmanuel Shears-Moses Esq, Joseph Fitzgerald Kumarer Esq, Abdul Tejan-Cole Esq, Elvis Kargbo Esq, Ibrahim Sorie Esq, Rhoda Sufian-Kargbo Esq and Basita Michael Basita Michael Esq
The former leaders collectively voiced their concerns over the conduct of some members during the event, which they described as contrary to the profession’s core values and principles.
“We, the undersigned Past Presidents of the Sierra Leone Bar Association, unreservedly condemn the violence perpetrated by some members of the Bar at the AGM in Kenema,” the notice stated. “Such actions are antithetical to the values and principles of our noble profession.”
The past presidents also condemned attempts to disenfranchise members and deny them their right to elect new leaders, calling any conduct undermining the democratic process within the Association unacceptable. They have called for a thorough investigation into these actions.
Given the seriousness of these issues, the past presidents are demanding the nullification of the AGM’s announced results. They assert that to restore faith and integrity within the Association, proper and transparent elections must be organized. These elections, they insist, should adhere to the highest standards of fairness and impartiality, ensuring all eligible members can vote without intimidation or obstruction.
The notice also urged the current leadership of the Sierra Leone Bar Association, headed by Ms. Eddinia Swallow, to take decisive action to address the observed irregularities and improprieties. The past presidents emphasized the importance of the Association’s commitment to the rule of law and democratic governance.
“We stand united in our resolve to protect the integrity of the Sierra Leone Bar Association and to ensure that justice and democracy prevail within our ranks,” the past presidents affirmed.
