Muslim communities around the world are set to commence the holy month of fasting following confirmation that the Ramadan crescent moon has been sighted in Saudi Arabia.

Authorities in the Kingdom confirmed that the new moon marking the beginning of Ramadan 1447 AH was sighted today. Consequently, Wednesday, 18 February 2026, has been declared the first day of Ramadan.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is a period of fasting, prayer, reflection, and spiritual renewal observed by millions of Muslims globally. From dawn until sunset, believers abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs while striving to increase acts of worship, charity, and good conduct.

In Sierra Leone, where Islam is widely practiced, many faithful are preparing to begin fasting in unity with the announcement. However, some communities may await local moon-sighting confirmations in accordance with their traditions.

Religious leaders have called on Muslims to welcome the sacred month with sincerity, patience, and renewed devotion, emphasizing the importance of compassion, generosity, and unity during this spiritually significant period.

“As Ramadan begins, it is an opportunity for self-discipline and closeness to Allah, as well as a time to strengthen bonds within families and communities,” scholars noted.

The start of Ramadan also marks a period of heightened worship, including nightly Taraweeh prayers, increased recitation of the Qur’an, and acts of charity to support the less privileged.

The month will conclude with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, subject to the sighting of the next crescent moon.

Muslims across the globe have begun exchanging greetings of “Ramadan Mubarak,” praying for peace, forgiveness, and blessings throughout the holy month.
