The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has issued a public advisory warning of anticipated heavy rainfall over the next three days, from July 30 to August 2, 2025. The forecast, provided by the African Union’s Climate Centre (ACMAD/OCHA) and supported by projections from the Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency (SLMet), indicates that Sierra Leone and several West African countries are expected to experience deep convective cloud activity, resulting in intense rainfall ranging from 100mm to 150mm over a five-day period.
According to the advisory, the projected rainfall significantly increases the likelihood of flash floods, landslides, damage to infrastructure, and other related hazards—especially in areas with poor drainage systems and communities situated in flood-prone zones.
Communities identified as being at greater risk include low-lying coastal areas, hillside settlements, erosion-prone slopes, and neighborhoods with poor waste management or blocked waterways. Areas that have recently experienced heavy rainfall and are already saturated are also highly vulnerable.
In an effort to mitigate the potential impact, the NDMA has urged members of the public to take the following precautionary measures:
Relocate from high-risk areas: Residents living in floodplains, near riverbanks, or on unstable slopes are advised to consider temporary relocation during the forecast period.
Clear gutters and waterways: Communities are encouraged to clean drainage systems to facilitate water flow and minimize localized flooding.
Report emergencies promptly: Citizens are reminded to call NDMA’s toll-free emergency line 1199, available on all mobile networks, to report any incidents.
The NDMA emphasized that the warning is a proactive measure to ensure preparedness and public safety. The agency remains in close coordination with the Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency and international partners, and it has assured the public of a swift response to any emerging incidents.
