The Director General of the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT), Mr. Mohamed Fuaad Daboh, has described the proposed Informal Sector Pension Scheme as a transformative initiative that will significantly expand social protection coverage to the majority of Sierra Leoneans.

Speaking during a town hall meeting organized by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education in Port Loko, Northwest Region, Mr. Daboh emphasized the importance of the scheme in achieving President Julius Maada Bio’s vision of inclusive social protection for all categories of workers.

“This proposed pension scheme is a game changer,” Mr. Daboh asserted. “It represents a critical step towards ensuring that informal sector workers—who make up a large portion of our workforce—are not left behind in our national development agenda”

He commended President Bio for his commitment to extending social protection to every worker in Sierra Leone, regardless of their employment status.

Mr. Daboh revealed that under his leadership, NASSIT has been actively working to bring the President’s vision to life.

“A national game changer policy has been developed and submitted to the Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security,” he said. “This policy is now with the Informal Sector Steering Committee for validation.

”The proposed scheme is expected to cover workers in the informal economy, including market women, Okada riders, farmers, artisans, and other self-employed individuals who traditionally fall outside the formal social security system.

The town hall meeting formed part of the government’s ongoing efforts to engage citizens on key policy initiatives and gather public input.

The introduction of the Informal Sector Pension Scheme marks a significant step in the drive toward universal social protection and financial inclusion across Sierra Leone.
