Football enthusiasts in Moyamba District witnessed the grand launch of the Babadi Kamara Chiefdom League 2024 on Sunday, December 1, 2024, at the Moyamba Playing Field. Organized by the Moyamba District Football Association (MDFA), the event marked the official start of an initiative aimed at fostering unity and nurturing football talent across the district.
The tournament, named after its sponsor, Babadi Kamara, was graced by a host of dignitaries, including Paramount Chief Foday Momoh Gulama of Kayamba Chiefdom, Southern Region Football Association Chairman Benedict Bogba, Bo District Chairman Victor Kosseh Hindowa, and other notable figures from the football and political arenas.Babadi Kamara, who performed the ceremonial first kick, emphasized the broader vision behind his sponsorship of local leagues.
He described football as a tool for promoting peace, unity, and coexistence among communities, aligning with President Julius Maada Bio’s vision of human capital development.
Kamara noted that beyond entertainment, such leagues serve as platforms for discovering and nurturing young talent with the potential to reach the global stage.“This initiative is more than just about competition; it’s about creating opportunities for our youth to thrive and building a society where people coexist peacefully,” Kamara stated.
He also unveiled plans to expand the Chiefdom League into district and regional tournaments, underscoring his ambition to transform Sierra Leonean football using the success of Bo Rangers as a blueprint.
The MDFA announced a sponsorship package of NLe 100,000 for the league, with attractive prizes for the top teams. The champion will receive a brand-new motorbike valued at NLe 25,000, while the second and third place teams will take home NLe 15,000 and NLe 10,000, respectively.
Kamara urged all 14 participating Chiefdoms to uphold the principles of fair play and sportsmanship throughout the competition. He called on the community to support his vision of developing football as a vehicle for positive change in Sierra Leone.
