The Lawyers’ Society of Sierra Leone has expressed deep concern over recent developments surrounding an alleged coup attempt that was reportedly thwarted by the nation’s security forces.

In a press statement issued yesterday, the association commended the swift actions taken to prevent any threat to national stability while emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic principles.

“We reject any efforts to unconstitutionally remove a government through military-style overthrows,” the statement read, underscoring that any change in government must occur through credible electoral processes.

The Lawyers’ Society applauded the security forces for their response but stressed the need for transparency and accountability in handling such incidents. “It is vital that the public is informed about the nature and extent of the security response. Transparency will help maintain public confidence in the rule of law and our justice system,” the statement emphasized.

The Society also highlighted the importance of creating an environment conducive to tolerance and constructive criticism. For democracy to thrive, it noted, dissenting views must be allowed space.

The statement called for a robust and active opposition as a cornerstone of democratic governance, urging authorities to ensure the safety and rights of opposition figures and civil society actors.

“We urge the police to fairly, effectively, and expeditiously investigate all incidents of violence and threats against all members of society, particularly those involving opposition figures and civil society,” the Lawyers’ Society added.

The Lawyers’ Society called on all stakeholders, including the government, security forces, and citizens, to work collaboratively to preserve the nation’s democratic fabric. It emphasized that all actions must align with the principles of justice, fairness, and respect for human rights.

Reaffirming its commitment to upholding the rule of law and promoting democratic values, the Lawyers’ Society concluded by urging a united effort to strengthen Sierra Leone’s democratic institutions and processes. This statement comes at a time when the country is grappling with political tensions, underscoring the need for national dialogue and adherence to constitutional principles.
