The Lawyers’ Society has issued a national call to action, urging a coordinated, multi-party, and multi-sectoral response to the growing KUSH drug epidemic, which continues to threaten the health, safety, and well-being of communities across Sierra Leone.

In a statement dated 23rd October 2025, the Society expressed deep concern over the increasing prevalence of KUSH, particularly among young people, noting that the effects of this highly addictive substance are visible in nearly every district and town.

The Society also raised alarm over the reported denial by the Inspector General of Police of a citizen’s request to organize a peaceful awareness campaign against KUSH. According to the statement, the refusal lacked clear justification or legal basis under the Public Order Act of 1965, potentially undermining lawful, lifesaving community initiatives. The Society called on the police and other state institutions to support and facilitate responsible public efforts rather than restrict them.

Highlighting the need for unity, the Lawyers’ Society emphasized that the fight against KUSH cannot be won by any single institution or sector. They urged government agencies, Parliament, civil society, religious and traditional leaders, the legal community, parents, and young people to collaborate on a coordinated national framework to curb drug abuse.

The Society reaffirmed its commitment to work with government and international partners to provide legal expertise and participate in creating policies that respect human rights while addressing the epidemic. They warned that Sierra Leone cannot afford to lose another generation to KUSH and called for immediate, collective, and conscientious action.
