The Lawyers Society has expressed deep concern over the arrest and continued detention of Lansana Dumbuya, a legal practitioner of 26 years and National Secretary General of the All People’s Congress (APC).

In a statement, the Society noted that Mr. Dumbuya’s arrest reportedly followed remarks he made at an APC party meeting on 31 January 2026, exercised in the constitutional right to freedom of expression. The statement emphasized that in a democracy, political speech and participation should not attract criminal sanctions, particularly when it contributes to national discourse.

The Lawyers’ Society called on the government to act in good faith, uphold the rule of law, and immediately release Mr. Dumbuya. The organization further urged authorities to discontinue all proceedings against him, highlighting that such action would be consistent with the spirit and letter of the tripartite agreement and serve the broader national interest.

“We reaffirm our commitment to justice, democratic principles, and peaceful political coexistence,” the Society stated. “Any restriction on lawful expression in the democratic space concerns all who value freedom and the rule of law.”

The call underscores ongoing concerns about the protection of civil liberties and political freedoms in Sierra Leone, as stakeholders continue to advocate for adherence to democratic norms and constitutional rights.
