The Lawyers’ Society expresses deep concern regarding the ongoing nationwide strike by teachers in government and government-assisted schools, initiated following the Sierra Leone Teachers’ Union (SLTU) ‘CALL FOR STRIKE ACTION’ of 3rd September 2025.

This call outlines nine (9) key issues that the Union demanded must be fully resolved to end the strike. As a result, the planned reopening of these schools on Monday, 8th September 2025, has been halted.

The Lawyers’ Society is particularly troubled that this strike originates from a suspended Strike Notice issued on 25th November 2024, which raised unresolved demands, including school fee subsidies for the previous academic year and the first term of the current year, as well as the resumption of teaching and learning material supplies, among others. These issues have gone unaddressed by the Government for the past three years.

Mindful of Section 9 of the Constitution of Sierra Leone (Act No. 6 of 1991), Sections 3 and 4(c) of the Basic and Senior Secondary Education Act 2023 (as amended), and recognizing education as the Government’s flagship initiative, the Lawyers’ Society calls upon the Government and all relevant stakeholders to prioritize and swiftly resolve the SLTU’s concerns and demands, ensuring the educational well-being and prospects of our children.

Lawyers Society urge the SLTU to remain open to additional dialogues and negotiations with the Government and other parties, with the aim of resolving their grievances and ending the strike as quickly as possible for the benefit of all involved and the nation at large.
