Hundreds of Legal professionals from across Sierra Leone will convene tomorrow as the Lawyers Society of Sierra Leone (LSSL) holds its first Annual General Meeting (AGM) on February 20–21, 2025, at T-Hall Big Water, Peninsula.

Themed “The Role of Lawyers in Democratic Governance,” the gathering is expected to set the tone for the society’s role in shaping the legal profession and governance in the country.

A key highlight of the AGM will be the keynote address by Faith M.A. Odhiambo, President of the Kenya Law Society. Odhiambo’s presence signals LSSL’s intent to leverage regional perspectives on strengthening legal institutions and reinforcing the rule of law in Sierra Leone.

Since its launch on November 1, 2024, the LSSL has positioned itself as a platform for legal practitioners committed to upholding justice, transparency, and the administration of the law. Its formation was influenced by concerns over governance within legal circles, particularly following allegations of malpractice during the Sierra Leone Bar Association’s AGM in May 2024. That controversy ignited discussions on the need for an alternative body that prioritizes fairness and democratic values within the legal profession.

With its inaugural AGM, the LSSL aims to outline its vision for the legal landscape in Sierra Leone. Discussions will focus on the role of lawyers in fostering accountability, judicial independence, and policy reforms that strengthen democratic governance.

As legal minds gather for this milestone event, attention will be on the resolutions emerging from the deliberations and how the LSSL intends to position itself as a key stakeholder in Sierra Leone’s democratic evolution.
