The Lawyers Society of Sierra Leone (LSSL) is set to host its first Annual General Meeting (AGM) on February 20-21, 2025, at T-Hall Big Water, York Peninsula.

The event, themed “The Role of Lawyers in Democratic Governance,” will feature Faith M.A. Odhiambo, President of the Kenya Law Society, as the keynote speaker.

Among the critical matters to be discussed are the review, amendment, and adoption of the agenda and constitution, the election of returning officers and executive board members, the passing of resolutions, and other relevant business matters.

The AGM will also address important legal discussions, including how courts can engineer the democratization process and the influence of good citizenry on good governance. Keynote speakers will deliver addresses, and there will be Q&A sessions and action points on both topics.

Positions open for election include President, Vice-President, General Secretary, Assistant General Secretary, Public Relations Officer, Treasurer, and Organizing Secretary. Members interested in vying for these positions or nominating others must submit nominations to the secretariat by Wednesday, 19th February 2025.

Additionally, members are encouraged to appoint proxies if unable to attend in person. Proxy forms are available on the Lawyers’ Society website and must be submitted by the same deadline.

The agenda also features the history and vision of the Lawyers’ Society, short statements from senior members of the Bar, and discussions on future activities, programs, and initiatives.

The meeting will conclude with the president-elect’s maiden address and the adoption of the draft constitution.

The LSSL, officially launched on November 1, 2024, aims to promote the rule of law, justice, and professional development within the legal community.

Its formation was influenced by concerns over alleged electoral malpractice at the Sierra Leone Bar Association’s AGM in May 2024, which led to widespread calls for a more transparent legal body.
