The Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, has publicly challenged the government’s ongoing “Go for Gold” Citizenship by Investment Scheme, describing it as a dangerous initiative that threatens Sierra Leone’s national security and international standing.

Under the program, foreign nationals can obtain Sierra Leonean residency or citizenship by paying a specified fee from abroad without undergoing standard background checks or immigration procedures. Hon. Kargbo expressed deep concern over what he termed a “loophole for exploitation” that could result in the unchecked sale of national identity.“

This scheme is not just flawed—it’s reckless,” Kargbo warned during a recent parliamentary statement.

“We cannot afford to commercialize our sovereignty and allow foreign interests to purchase access to our country without any real scrutiny.”

Kargbo emphasized that the program, introduced without clear parliamentary oversight or public consultation, lacks transparency and accountability.

He cautioned that the initiative could enable individuals with questionable backgrounds to acquire legal residency or citizenship, posing serious threats to both institutional integrity and national security.

While acknowledging the importance of attracting foreign investment, Hon. Kargbo insisted that such efforts must respect Sierra Leone’s constitutional order and long-term national interest.

“Yes, we need investors, but not at the cost of our dignity, security, and sovereignty,” he said.

He called for an immediate suspension of the program and a comprehensive review involving Parliament, civil society organizations, and national security agencies.
