The Coalition of Healthcare Workers has announced its intention to launch a nationwide strike starting December 24, 2024, following a 21-day notice issued to the government over unresolved welfare grievances.

At a press conference in Freetown, the Coalition reaffirmed its stance, citing frustration over delays in addressing critical demands, including better working conditions, salary adjustments, and fair treatment of healthcare workers.

Dr. Eugene Conteh, Chairman of the Coalition, stressed that the group remains resolute, with no plans to reconsider unless tangible actions are taken by the government before the notice expires on December 23.

Speaking on behalf of the Sierra Leone Nurses Association (SLNA), Senior Nurse Nanah Fofah outlined key issues fueling the discontent. Among these are the equitable distribution of resources such as fuel, overdue promotions, and a call for respect and dignity for healthcare professionals across all levels.

Musa B. Sillah, President of the Sierra Leone Association of Community Health Officers (SLACHO), detailed the planned industrial action. He emphasized that all healthcare workers under the Coalition, excluding medical doctors, are expected to suspend services. This includes nurses, community health officers, pharmacists, and other essential personnel. Public hospitals and health facilities are likely to face widespread disruptions as the strike takes effect.

Additional measures announced include a halt on Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) reporting from health facilities and the deployment of a task force to monitor compliance nationwide. Sillah noted that the Coalition has held discussions with hospital matrons to ensure alignment with the planned actions

While reiterating their willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue, Coalition leaders warned that failure to address their demands will leave no alternative but to proceed with the strike. The looming industrial action raises concerns about the potential strain on healthcare delivery during the festive season, when demand for medical services often increases. The Coalition has assured its members of unwavering support throughout the strike and pledged to provide updates as developments unfold.
