The Freetown Secondary School for Girls (FSSG) is gearing up for a historic milestone, with plans to mark its centenary in January 2026 through a series of commemorative events.

The announcement was made at a press conference held on October 29 at the school’s Freetown campus, organized by the Ex-Pupils Association in collaboration with the FSSG Centenary Committee.

Speaking at the event, Mantilla Hughes, Chairperson of the Centenary Committee, described the upcoming celebration as both “a tribute to our proud legacy and a renewed commitment to promoting girl-child education for the next hundred years.”

Founded in 1926 with just 20 pupils, FSSG has grown into one of Sierra Leone’s premier institutions for girls, nurturing generations of women who have excelled in diverse fields, from education and law to politics and business.

The committee unveiled a full calendar of centenary activities, starting with the official launch on November 2, 2025. Highlights include a three-day Trade Fair from December 26 to 28, which will feature local entrepreneurs, alumni businesses, and memorabilia celebrating the school’s rich history. Additional events are scheduled throughout January 2026, promising a festive and reflective month-long celebration.

Hughes emphasized that the centenary is not only a moment to reflect on past achievements but also an opportunity to reinforce the importance of investing in girls’ education, ensuring that FSSG continues to empower young women for generations to come.

The centenary promises to be a landmark celebration, showcasing FSSG’s enduring impact on education and its pivotal role in shaping Sierra Leone’s future female leaders.
