Freetown’s Mayor, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, once again emphasizes the importance of cultural heritage and tourism during the launch of the Krio Descendants Union’s Wellington Satellite Group.

In a social media post documenting her involvement, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr praised the initiative, stressing that protecting cultural identity is vital to unlocking heritage tourism. “Preserving cultural heritage is critical to promoting heritage tourism as a source of job creation,” she stated, aligning the event with her administration’s broader goals of fostering sustainable development and youth employment.

The KDU, known for its efforts to celebrate the Krio people’s unique contributions to Sierra Leone’s history, aims to broaden its influence through the newly established Wellington branch.

The satellite group represents a strategic step toward engaging more communities in preserving traditions, ensuring younger generations remain rooted in their ancestry.
