The Office of His Excellency Ernest Bai Koroma, former President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, has issued a heartfelt tribute in memory of the late H.E. Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In a solemn message of condolence, President Koroma expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Nigerian statesman, describing him as “a towering figure in African leadership” whose life was defined by unwavering dedication to public service and regional stability.

“It is with a heavy heart and deep sorrow that I extend my profound condolences to the bereaved family of the late H.E. Muhammadu Buhari, to His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and to the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” President Koroma stated.

Reflecting on President Buhari’s legacy, he noted the former leader’s transformative journey from military service to becoming a democratically elected President, marked by modesty, resilience, and a deep sense of duty.

President Koroma also recalled their close collaboration under the auspices of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), particularly during the 2017 mediation in The Gambia, which successfully ensured a peaceful political transition.

“In those moments, I saw in him not only a respected head of state, but a deeply principled leader whose wisdom and resolve helped avert crisis and uphold democratic values across our subregion,” he said.

As tributes continue to pour in from across the continent, President Koroma offered prayers for divine comfort for President Buhari’s family, the Nigerian people, and all who were impacted by his life and leadership.

“May the soul of our brother, elder statesman, and faithful servant of the people rest in eternal peace. To Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return.”

President Muhammadu Buhari served as President of Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, and was widely regarded for his anti-corruption stance, integrity, and contributions to peacebuilding within the West African region.
