Residents in Moyamba and Kailahun district have said that, they have no regret in
overwhelmingly voting for President Julius Maada Bio and his Sierra Leone Peoples Party
(SLPP) in the 2018 elections. This statement came after the announcement of Government
commitment and determination to urgently take electricity to the headquarter towns of the
two districts.
The Minister of Energy, Alhaji Kanja Sesay, on Saturday 18th July, 2020, and on Sunday
19th July, 2020, announced in both districts that, the SLPP Government through his Ministry
will in the next 18 months electrify Moyamba and Kailahun.
In addition to this, the Government is on the verge of completing the Kenema/Kailahun road
and the Moyamba road respectively. According to the people, the coming of electricity in
their districts is a clear indication that, President Bio’s government is more than ready to take
development to every part of the country. “With just this two major development projects at
the moment, our district stands a better chance to open to not only other parts of the country,
but to the outside world, thereby bringing investment to our doorstep”, they noted.
Speaking to the people of Moyamba, the Minister of Finance, Mr. Jacob Jusu Saffa
confirmed that 30% of the money to electrify Kabala, Kambia, Moyamba and Kailahun is
already available for the work to start.
Mr. Saffa that said the contractors for the said project has been given the go-ahead to
immediately mobilize after the signing of all necessary documents.
He reminded that, it is their right to enjoy such facilities. The Minister noted that, it was
rather unfortunate that, the people of this country, particularly those living out of the
country’s capital city were denied essential facilities.
“There is no responsible government that can do such to its people…This is exactly what the
SLPP Government is trying to correct”, said the Minister. Minister Saffa maintained that,
they undertook this project in fulfillment of the promise made in the SLPP Manifesto in the
2018 Presidential elections. He added that, they plan to take electricity to all district
headquarter towns, especially six districts before President Bio’s first term ends. The six
districts are; Kabala, the headquarter town of Koinadugu district, Kambia, Moyamba,
Kailahun, Pujehun and Bonthe.
The scope of the project stated that, a total of 550 households will be connected in Moyamba
and 500 in Kailahun as a start. The project, which is said to be singularly funded by the
government, is a brand new contribution of transmission and distribution of network in all
districts.
Speaker after speaker disclosed that, with the coming of electricity in their various districts,
they would stand a better chance to put more money into their pockets by doing business.
