The Freetown City Council (FCC) and the Carter Center have strengthened their collaboration under the Inform Women, Transform Lives campaign, a global initiative aimed at expanding women’s access to vital information.

On Tuesday, 19 August 2025, Mayor of Freetown Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr OBE met with the Carter Center’s representative in Freetown and Innovation for Community Resilience to review progress and plan next steps.

The campaign places particular emphasis on gender-responsive waste management services while promoting the #8244 helpline, a free service designed to connect women directly with information and essential services.

Practical elements of the initiative include community murals to raise awareness, collaboration with civil society organizations to reach more women, and targeted media campaigns to ensure information is accessible and inclusive.

Mayor Aki-Sawyerr described the meeting as a reaffirmation of FCC’s commitment to empowering women in the city. “When women have access to information, they can make informed decisions that improve their lives, their families, and their communities,” she said.

The strengthened partnership is expected to pave the way for more effective public engagement, ensuring women across Freetown benefit from the campaign’s gender-responsive approach to city services.
