The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS Commission) has announced an upcoming Assessment Mission to Sierra Leone, scheduled from 4th to 7th June 2024. This mission aims to evaluate the progress of the ‘Agreement for National Unity’ signed between the Government of Sierra Leone and the All Peoples Congress (APC) party on 18 October 2023.
The mission will be led by Her Excellency Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang, the former Vice President of the Republic of The Gambia and Joint Facilitator of the Mediated Dialogue process. Accompanying her will be representatives from the African Union Commission (AUC), the United Nations Office in West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), and the Commonwealth of Nations.
During the mission, the delegation will engage in consultations with the Committee on Electoral Systems and Management Bodies Review, the government of Sierra Leone, and the APC party. They will also meet with other moral guarantors of the Agreement, including the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC), various stakeholders, and members of the diplomatic community.
The ECOWAS Commission has requested the cooperation of the Government of Sierra Leone to ensure the mission’s success. This initiative underscores ECOWAS’s commitment to supporting peace and unity in Sierra Leone through the effective implementation of the National Unity Agreement.
