Sierra Leone’s rising football star, Saidu Musa “Jones” Bangura, has made headlines in Austria not only for his talent on the pitch but also for a touching act of humanity that has captured widespread media attention.
Ahead of a recent match in Austria’s second-tier league, a heavy downpour delayed kick-off. As players and officials sought cover, the 19-year-old defender removed his training vest and used it to shield a young mascot from the rain.
The gesture, displayed on the stadium’s giant screen, stunned fans who applauded the moment of compassion. Local media outlets have since hailed Bangura’s action as a symbol of humility and humanity in football.

Bangura, who is experiencing his first season in European football, recently signed a contract with Schwarz Weiß Bregenz that runs until 2027. The centre-back joined the Vorarlberg-based club from Sierra Leone Premier League champions East End Lions, where he played a pivotal role in their 2024/25 title-winning campaign—the club’s first since 2019.
While many had expected his name to make headlines for defensive brilliance, it was his off-the-pitch kindness that endeared him to Austrian fans and highlighted the values of Sierra Leonean footballers abroad.
