COBA HOLDS 67TH ANNUAL CELEBRATIONS

A congregation of the alumni association of Christ the King College last weekend converged in Bo city to observe the 67th annual celebrations and the Feast of Christ the King.

The three-day event which drew Cobians from all over the world commenced with a re-union night on Friday the 20th, an Annual General Meeting of the Old boys on Saturday the 21st November, and was climaxed with a Thanksgiving Mass on 22nd November, 2020.

Delivering his address at the Annual General Meeting, the National President, Kwame Yankson, lauded the efforts of Cobians across the world for giving back to their alma mater, saying, “I am overwhelmed by your love and show of support for my team and by extension the school”

Giving an update on the successes of his team in its first year in office, the President intimated his audience that despite the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, his Executive, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, and the school’s Board of Governors, re- instated the much desired single shift system.

“This”, he said, “would not have been possible without the immeasurable support from Cobians across the world and partners like Mercury International who funded the construction of the ten (10) classroom project initiated by my predecessor”. Mr. Yankson went on to say that additional buildings were also rehabilitated to accommodate the single shift system., and acknowledged the efforts of the Board Chairman, Ing. Dr. John E. Tambi, Dr. David Sengeh, Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary School Education, Mercury International Sierra Leone and Cobians for their support.

The President further informed the meeting that he received Forty-Two (42) high speed computers from COBA North America and Cobians, Augustine Conteh in Australia and Milton Kawa for the school’s ICT laboratory. He said the school was now prepared to build the capacity of its boys in ICT skills to face global competitiveness.

Additionally, Mr. Yankson said that at the height of Covid-19 pandemic, his Executive rallied round Cobians to raise support for the wellbeing of the teachers and support staff of the school. He said every staff at CKC, teachers and non-teachers alike, received a bag of rice and a gallon of cooking oil, amounting to Eighty- Six bags of rice and Eighty -Six gallons of cooking oil.

Concluding, the President called for unity within the Alumni Association devoid of political or regional considerations.

On his part, the Chairman, Board of Governors, Dr. John Edward Tambi, expressed satisfaction in the determination of the Executive to change the narrative in COBA. He laid bare his plans to join the Alumni, Government and Proprietors to make CKC great again.

Dr. Tambi said he had developed a five-year plan to transform the college to a modern campus,  including the fencing of the Thirty-Four acres of land housing the college, returning the school to its high academic excellence, the construction of additional three iconic structures as classrooms on the other side of the school field, a library, an ultramodern assembly hall, a sport complex and a boarding home to house pupils.

The Chairman however cautioned that those plans could only be translated into action if Cobians remained committed to support them. He joined the President of COBA in the call for unity among members and to take politics out of the association and embrace one another.

Presenting his annual report on behalf of the two administrations, the Principal of the Senior Secondary School, Edward Koroma, expressed gratitude to COBA, the Board and Government for returning the school to the single shift system, and the strides to make CKC great again. He informed his audience that despite the poor performance of students in the recently published West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination results, a pupil, Seimoi Jusufu, earned the best result in the region with 9 credits.

The Principal pledged his administration’s commitment to change the trajectory and put the school on its known platform of discipline and academic excellence.

“Let me assure you of our commitment to bringing back the glorious days of this great school”, he concluded.

The meeting ended on a note of hope and renewed energy by members to serve their alma mater.
