Human rights advocate Basita Michael has urged authorities to release Zainab Sheriff, insisting she should not spend International Women’s Day in prison.

Michael made the appeal through a public campaign circulating on social media, joining other activists advocating for Sheriff’s freedom. The campaign poster, which has gained attention online, carries the bold message: “Free Zainab Sheriff”, calling for justice in her case.

The initiative is also supported by the Institute for Legal Research and Advocacy for Justice, a civil society organisation that focuses on legal advocacy and the promotion of human rights in Sierra Leone.

In her message, Michael emphasised that keeping Sheriff behind bars during the global celebration of women would be troubling. “International Women’s Day is meant to celebrate women’s progress and advocate for equality, justice, and dignity for women everywhere,” she said.

She added that the call for Sheriff’s release goes beyond one individual, highlighting the broader struggle for justice and the protection of women’s rights in the country. Supporters of the campaign warn that prolonged detention or delays in such cases may undermine public confidence in the justice system, echoing the principle: “Justice delayed is justice denied.”

Observers say the campaign has sparked discussions across social media, with citizens, activists, and civil society groups debating issues related to justice, women’s rights, and the legal system. Michael further called on civil society organisations, women’s groups, and the international community to maintain pressure and ensure the legal rights of women are respected.

As Sierra Leone and the world prepare to mark International Women’s Day, calls for Sheriff’s release are expected to intensify, with supporters urging authorities to act in a way that reflects respect for justice, human rights, and the dignity of women.
