“Bail Is a Constitutional Safeguard ” — Alie Kabba Calls for Bail for APC Secretary General Lansana Dumbuya

Alie Kabba has called for the respect of constitutional principles and due process in the ongoing legal matter involving the National Secretary General of the All People’s Congress (APC), Lansana Dumbuya.

In a public statement titled “Bail is a Constitutional Safeguard,” Kabba reflected on his own arrest in 2015 under the administration of former President Ernest Bai Koroma. He described his detention at the time as a grave abuse of state power, alleging that constitutional safeguards were disregarded when he was denied bail and confined at Pademba Road Prison.

According to Kabba, despite the political climate at the time, supporters of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) stood firmly in demanding fairness and justice. He also acknowledged that some principled members of the All People’s Congress (APC), including Lawyer Alieu Iscandari, spoke out against what he described as injustice.

Drawing parallels to the present situation, Kabba referenced the detention of APC National Secretary General Lansana Dumbuya, who is currently being held at Pademba Road Prison on allegations including insulting President Julius Maada Bio.

While condemning Dumbuya’s alleged actions, Kabba urged against what he termed emotional or retaliatory responses. He emphasized that bail should be granted as a matter of constitutional right while the case proceeds through the courts.

“Bail is not acquittal. Bail is not endorsement. Bail is a constitutional safeguard,” Kabba stated, adding that granting bail affirms due process and respect for the rule of law. He further argued that by virtue of Dumbuya’s public office and standing, he does not pose a flight risk.

Kabba maintained that the SLPP must consistently uphold constitutional order, democratic maturity, and national unity. He called on party supporters and citizens alike to lead by principle and example, reiterating the national slogan: “One Country… One People! Everyone In… No One Out!”

His remarks come amid ongoing political tensions surrounding the case, as calls for adherence to constitutional protections continue to shape public discourse.
