In a recent press release, the leading opposition party, the All Peoples Congress (APC), has voiced its strong opposition to the declaration of a state of emergency while condemning the growing menace of Kush in the nation. The APC’s stance underscores its commitment to addressing critical issues facing Sierra Leone, particularly the health and well-being of its youth.
Expressing deep concern over the widespread use of Kush—a highly addictive substance—the APC unequivocally condemns all aspects of its trade, including sale, use, manufacture, supply, and distribution. The party pledges full support for law enforcement agencies, the justice system, and parliamentary efforts aimed at eradicating this destructive drug from society.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, the APC emphasizes the need for a united front in combating Kush trafficking networks. It stresses that political affiliations should not hinder collective efforts to tackle this crisis, urging a nonpartisan approach driven by a common goal to safeguard the future of Sierra Leonean youth.
While acknowledging the government’s initiative to address the issue, the APC opposes the declaration of a state of emergency, advocating instead for a State of Public Health Emergency designation. The party asserts that such a designation should focus solely on health-related responses and be implemented for a limited duration, devoid of political bias or abuse of power. Any attempt to exploit the state of emergency for political gain or suppression of dissent will be met with staunch resistance from the APC and democratic-minded citizens.
Furthermore, the APC insists on adherence to constitutional provisions, particularly Section 29, which safeguards against the arbitrary exercise of detention powers. The party underscores the importance of establishing checks and balances, such as a special tribunal, to prevent the misuse of emergency measures.
In reaffirming its commitment to upholding citizens’ rights and promoting public health, the APC pledges unwavering dedication to finding solutions that uphold the rule of law and prioritize the well-being of all Sierra Leoneans.
