The All Peoples Congress (APC) has expressed strong opposition to the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) government’s recent proposal to extend the Proportional Representation (PR) system to the Executive arm of government.
APC National Secretary General, Lawyer Lansana Dumbuya, voiced his concerns during a meeting with presidential advisors at State House, describing the move as unnecessary and undemocratic. He emphasized that Sierra Leone needs honest and accountable leadership rather than changes to the structure of executive selection.
“The selection of the executive should remain in the hands of the citizens,” Dumbuya stated. “The government’s role should be to guide the process, ensuring that people are able to make informed decisions.”
Dumbuya called for a national referendum on the issue, arguing that citizens should have the final say on whether a PR system is suitable for any arm of government. He reiterated the APC’s longstanding rejection of the PR system in favor of preserving democratic choice.
Known for his forthrightness, Dumbuya has consistently challenged what he views as undemocratic practices by the Bio administration. His leadership within the APC is credited with strengthening party structures, promoting good governance, and inspiring confidence among party supporters ahead of the 2028 elections
