During deliberations on the ratification of major diplomatic agreements, the Leader of the All People’s Congress (APC) in Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, has issued a strong caution to government officials, warning against the potential security risks that could arise from international cooperation if not properly managed.
While commending the Minister of Foreign Affairs for his proactive leadership, Hon. Kargbo stressed that efforts to strengthen foreign relations should not come at the cost of national safety. He particularly raised concern that poorly monitored agreements could unintentionally create loopholes for drug trafficking and other cross-border crimes.
“Let us not compromise our national security in the name of international cooperation,” Hon. Kargbo warned. “We must remain alert to the risks, especially as we open our borders to more bilateral engagements.”
Despite his caution, he supported the visa exemption agreement with Kazakhstan, describing it as a positive development for diplomatic relations, and also endorsed the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea agreement, which he said could contribute to marine resource protection and economic diversification.
On Sierra Leone’s periodic report under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the APC leader expressed the opposition’s willingness to support initiatives that serve the national interest, while maintaining a need for accountability in implementation.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Tawa Conteh, also contributed to the debate, praising the Foreign Affairs Minister for leading the diplomatic efforts. He said the report to the UN showcased notable gains in sectors like education and healthcare.
Parliament went on to ratify:
The Visa Exemption Agreement with Kazakhstan for holders of diplomatic and service passports;
The UNCLOS agreement on the conservation of marine biodiversity beyond national borders;
The Combined 6th and 7th Periodic Report under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
While the ratifications mark important steps in Sierra Leone’s diplomatic engagement, Hon. Kargbo’s remarks served as a timely reminder that international cooperation must always be balanced with firm safeguards for national security.
