Lawyer Ady Macauley, Leading flagbearer aspirant for the All People’s Congress (APC), has once again demonstrated his compassion and sense of national duty by donating essential supplies to the National Rehabilitation Centre at the Peace Mission Training Centre in Hastings becoming the first politician to support the facility since its establishment.

Macauley’s donation included 50 bags of 50kg rice, five containers of cooking oil, five bundles of clothing, five bags of onions, 10 cartons of sardines, and 200 bundles of water items intended to aid the ongoing rehabilitation of individuals recovering from drug and substance abuse, particularly kush addicts.

Speaking during the presentation, Macauley described the fight against drug abuse as a “national responsibility that transcends politics,” stressing that the growing misuse of drugs among young people is a threat to Sierra Leone’s future. He emphasized that the issue should not be politicized, but tackled collectively with compassion, focus, and determination.

“Drug addiction is not a crime it is a health and social crisis,” he said. “Those battling addiction are not criminals; they are victims who need support, not stigma.”

The former Anti-Corruption Commission Commissioner noted that with more than 60 percent of Sierra Leone’s population under 35, the country risks losing its most valuable resource if the kush epidemic continues unchecked. He underscored the importance of empowering young people to become productive citizens, starting with safeguarding their mental and physical wellbeing.

Macauley revealed that he has initiated talks with the Inspector General of Police to obtain clearance for a nationwide awareness campaign and peace march aimed at educating communities about the dangers of substance abuse.

Receiving the donation, Colonel Abdul Baba Keita, Commandant of the Peace Mission Training Centre, expressed profound gratitude to Macauley for what he described as “a timely and unprecedented act of leadership.” He commended him for being the first political figure to extend tangible support to the rehabilitation centre, noting that his gesture would motivate others to follow suit.

“Mr. Macauley’s donation comes at a time when the fight against drugs needs all hands on deck,” Colonel Keita stated. “His action is a reminder that political leaders can play a vital role in addressing the nation’s most pressing social challenges.”

Mohamed Bah, a Social Worker from the Ministry of Social Welfare, also lauded the initiative, describing it as a clear example of patriotism beyond party lines. He assured that the donated items would be used effectively to improve the welfare of the recovering youths.

Thomas Raphael Ansumana Esq., speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed heartfelt appreciation to Macauley for his compassion and willingness to stand with those often rejected by society. He dismissed misconceptions about rehabilitation centres being abusive, clarifying that they are spaces of care and reform.

“Many of us here are determined to rebuild our lives,” Ansumana said. “Mr. Macauley’s visit reminds us that society still cares.”

Ady Macauley’s latest humanitarian gesture further cements his growing reputation as a leader committed to social transformation, youth empowerment, and national unity. His action at Hastings sends a powerful message that meaningful leadership is not just about politics, but about service, compassion, and standing up for the nation’s most vulnerable.
