IMATT College Appoints Joel Tejan Deen-Tarawally Esq. as New Head of Law Department

FREETOWN, SIERRA LEONE: IMATT College has appointed legal practitioner and lecturer Joel Tejan Deen-Tarawally Esq. as the new Head of the Department of Law, effective 1st October 2026.

The appointment was announced by the Board and Management of IMATT College, which described Deen-Tarawally as a legal practitioner with 13 years of professional experience and a current Anti-Corruption Prosecutor. He has also served as a lecturer at the College for nearly four years, teaching courses including Human Rights Law, Media and Telecommunications Law, and Criminal Law.

According to the College, Deen-Tarawally previously co-lectured Contract Law at the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) alongside the late Justice Ivan Sesay JA of blessed memory. He holds an LL.M, BL, LL.B and B.A., and has authored several academic articles covering corruption, human rights, access to justice and other legal and national issues.

Before joining the legal profession, Deen-Tarawally worked as a Human Rights Advocate and Defence Lawyer at the Legal Aid Board, where he represented indigent persons and children in conflict with the law. He also previously served as Head of Compliance and Credit Control at United Bank for Africa

His appointment comes following his recent recognition among the recipients of this year’s 100 Most Impactful Sierra Leonean Leaders Award. The College also indicates that his professional experience, academic contributions and commitment to legal scholarship are expected to contribute to the continued development of the Department of Law.

Beyond his academic and professional credentials, Mr. Deen-Tarawally is also regarded within the College for his discipline, professionalism and commitment to high standards. His approach to teaching and engagement with students reflects a strong emphasis on responsibility, respect, accountability and adherence to academic standards. His appointment is therefore expected to reinforce discipline and professionalism within the Department of Law while supporting a conducive environment for teaching, learning and legal scholarship.

The College has called on staff and students to extend their full cooperation to Deen-Tarawally as he assumes the new role. The Board and Management further congratulated him and wished him success in leading the Department and advancing its academic and professional objectives.
