Parliament’s sitting on the Constitutional Amendment Bill was temporarily suspended on Monday, August 3, 2026, shortly after proceedings commenced, with the Speaker meeting with the Leader of Government Business and the Leader of the Opposition.

According to a parliamentary update shared by Mohamed Pope Kamara, Deputy National Publicity Secretary, the session began but was interrupted a few minutes later when the Speaker stood the House down for 30 minutes.

Kamara said more than an hour had passed since the suspension, while the Speaker remained engaged in a meeting with the two parliamentary leaders.

“As I type this, over an hour has passed, and the Speaker is still in a meeting with the two leaders—the Leader of Government Business and the Leader of the Opposition,” he stated.

He added that lawmakers and observers remained waiting for the sitting to resume.

The development comes as Parliament continues consideration of the Constitutional Amendment Bill, a legislative process that has attracted public and political attention due to its potential implications for Sierra Leone’s governance framework.
