Former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma has welcomed the decision by the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice to discontinue criminal proceedings against him, describing the move as a step towards promoting national peace, reconciliation, and social cohesion.

Dr. Koroma’s position was communicated through a statement issued by his Lead Counsel, Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara, Esq., following the filing of a Notice of Discontinuance under Section 45 of the Criminal Procedure Act, 2024, which brought an end to the legal proceedings previously instituted against him.

According to the statement, the Attorney-General’s decision represents an important step towards strengthening national unity and stability.

“President Koroma has always respected the judicial process, cooperated fully with authorities, and complied with all imposed bail conditions,” the statement said.

The former president’s legal team confirmed that following the discontinuance of the matter, all bail conditions attached to the case have been discharged. The statement added that Dr. Koroma is now free to return to Sierra Leone at a time of his choosing.

The legal team expressed hope that the conclusion of the proceedings would bring closure to the matter, while emphasising the importance of avoiding any further legal or extra-legal actions connected to the case.

Dr. Koroma, who served as Sierra Leone’s President from 2007 to 2018, has remained involved in peacebuilding initiatives and international engagements since leaving office. His legal team said he remains committed to supporting national dialogue, peace, and development.

The former President also expressed appreciation to President Julius Maada Bio, the Government of Sierra Leone, citizens, members of the international community, his legal team, and supporters who stood by him throughout the legal process.

The discontinuation of the charges marks a significant development in a case that attracted public attention locally and internationally, with discussions focused on accountability, governance, political stability, and reconciliation.
