Sierra Leonean journalist Edward W.J. Caulker, widely known as “Dictionary,” has criticised what he described as the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party’s greater focus on marking its 75th anniversary than commemorating the nation’s 65th Independence Day.

Speaking during a discussion on Epic Radio, Caulker said the balance of attention appeared tilted toward partisan celebrations at the expense of a key national occasion that should unite citizens across political lines.

According to him, the level of energy and visibility surrounding the SLPP’s anniversary activities gave the impression that the party milestone had taken precedence over Sierra Leone’s Independence anniversary.

He argued that Independence Day should remain a moment of shared patriotism and reflection on the country’s journey, rather than being overshadowed by political events.

Caulker further noted that public excitement around this year’s Independence celebrations seemed lower than in previous years, raising concerns about declining national enthusiasm for one of the country’s most symbolic dates.

He suggested that holding major party celebrations around the same period as Independence Day may blur the distinction between party interests and state identity, potentially affecting how citizens view national commemorations.

The journalist warned that such perceptions could gradually erode the broader national significance of Independence Day if not carefully managed.

His remarks come as discussions continue among citizens and political observers over the importance of preserving national events as inclusive celebrations above party politics.
