The opposition All People’s Congress (APC) has warned that it may embark on a peaceful nationwide protest if Edmond Sylvester Alpha continues in his role as Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone.

In a strongly worded statement, the party raised concerns about the credibility of the country’s electoral system, stating that it would not “lend legitimacy to a broken system.” The APC, however, expressed willingness to engage in dialogue, provided such discussions are conducted in good faith and aimed at resolving the issues. “We are determined to stand for the people of this country,” the statement noted.

Mr. Alpha’s appointment was announced on February 20, 2026, through a public notice from the Office of the President. Julius Maada Bio made the appointment in accordance with Section 32(3) of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone.

The development has sparked political debate, with the APC arguing that the leadership change could undermine public confidence in the electoral process. The party’s warning of a possible protest highlights growing political tension as the country approaches key electoral activities.

Political analysts have underscored the need for constructive dialogue among stakeholders, cautioning that prolonged disagreements could erode trust in democratic institutions if not addressed promptly.
