In a decisive ruling, Justice Fisher sentenced five armed robbers to lengthy prison terms, with one of the convicts receiving 40 years imprisonment.
The convicts Mohamed Mansaray, Umaru Momoh Kanu, Momoh Kabba, Musa Kargbo, and Mohamed Kamara were found guilty of conspiracy to commit robbery with aggravation, two counts of robbery with aggravation, and shooting with intent.
On March 8, 2024, the gang, armed with a gun and machetes, attacked Yayah Barrie and Franklin Gbao, making away with mobile phones and cash valued at Le5,000. During the attack, the second convict shot Barrie with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Initially pleading not guilty, the five accused were prosecuted by Christopher Cole Esq., who presented evidence that convinced the court of their guilt. Defence counsel Randy Bangura Esq. of the Legal Aid Board pleaded for leniency, citing the convicts’ youth and potential for reform.
Justice Fisher ruled that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and imposed the following sentences:
Umaru Momoh Kanu (second convict) – 40 years imprisonment
Mohamed Mansaray (first convict) – 30 years imprisonment
Momoh Kabba – 28 years imprisonment
Musa Kargbo – 28 years imprisonment
- Mohamed Kamara – 28 years imprisonment
The court ordered that all sentences run concurrently.
