Sierra Leoneans have expressed frustration over the sudden increase in fuel prices, as the Government, through the National Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NPRA), raised the pump price of petrol and diesel from NLe 25 to NLe 28.50 per litre, effective immediately.

The abrupt adjustment, which also affects kerosene and fuel oil, comes without prior notification to the public. Many citizens are questioning the rationale behind the hike, noting that global fuel prices have not seen a corresponding rise that would justify such a jump.

Under the new “Petroleum Pricing Regime,” the approved pump prices are: petrol NLe 28.50, diesel NLe 28.50, kerosene NLe 26.76, and fuel oil NLe 25.98 per litre. NPRA explained that the pricing structure considers global market rates, domestic economic factors, exchange rate adjustments, and levies such as the Road User Charge and Infrastructure Development Fund.

However, the public reaction has been largely negative. Commuters, transport operators, and traders warn that the sudden increase will escalate the cost of transport and goods across the country, placing additional strain on already struggling households.

“This is unacceptable. There was no prior warning, and the world market has not increased to justify this. How can citizens cope with this sudden burden?” asked one frustrated motorbike rider in Freetown.

Critics argue that the lack of transparency and consultation in the price hike reflects a government disconnected from the daily struggles of ordinary Sierra Leoneans. Many have called for more predictable pricing policies and better communication to avoid unnecessary hardship.

The move is expected to have widespread implications for transportation fares, goods, and services nationwide, intensifying public pressure on authorities to explain and justify the decision.
