The Lawyers’ Society has confirmed that its president, Augustine Sorie-Sengbe Marrah, Esq., filed a case before the Supreme Court of Sierra Leone on Wednesday, 24 December 2025, seeking protection and enforcement of his constitutional rights to freedom of thought and expression.

The action is directed against Lloyd Hindolo Jusu, the Deputy Master and Registrar of the High Court of Sierra Leone, and other parties. According to the Society, the case challenges whether a complaint lodged against Mr. Marrah with the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council—based on statements he made on AYV Television on 10 December 2025, International Human Rights Day—violates his constitutionally guaranteed rights under the Constitution of Sierra Leone (Act No. 6 of 1991) and international human rights treaties to which Sierra Leone is a party.

The legal action also raises concerns about potential “double penalization,” as it references a previously resolved contempt matter from 2020 and an incident during a non-judicial meeting in 2022.

Mr. Marrah contends that relying on these past matters to support current disciplinary proceedings amounts to an unfair hearing and is unconstitutional. In addition, Mr. Marrah has filed a Notice of Motion requesting a stay of the disciplinary proceedings before the General Legal Council’s Disciplinary Committee while the Supreme Court examines the constitutional issues.

The Lawyers’ Society expressed full support for its president, describing the action as a stand for the rule of law and constitutionalism. The Society urged judicial authorities to ensure that the case is determined fairly and expeditiously, without delay or interference.

“The Society remains committed to advancing a free and democratic society and will stand firmly with all whose constitutional rights are threatened or violated,” the statement said.

The Lawyers’ Society also pledged to keep the public updated on developments in the case as they unfold.
