The Sierra Leone Police have issued directives to ensure peace and public safety during the festive season. The announcement was made through the police Communications Unit.
The press release outlines several prohibited activities, including loud music or disruptive noise after 10 p.m., as stipulated in Section 13 of the Public Order Act of 1965. Police emphasized that complaints received regarding disturbances during late hours will result in punitive action.
ACP Brima Kamara, Head of Media for the Sierra Leone Police, stated that while citizens have a right to celebrate, the police are committed to protecting the comfort and safety of others. “Many people need rest, especially those who go to work early. Celebrations should not come at the expense of public peace,” he said.
The police also reiterated that no individual or group may hold street processions or carnivals without written permission from the Inspector General of Police, Mr. William Fayia Sellu. ACP Kamara explained that these measures are necessary to prevent incidents that may threaten public safety during the festive season.
To support enforcement, the police have installed street lights and CCTV cameras along the Lumley-Aberdeen beach area to monitor activities, particularly as the location attracts large crowds. ACP Kamara assured that security measures will be reinforced to maintain peace throughout the season.
Religious bodies and leaders are also reminded that street processions require prior written approval, reinforcing the commitment to public safety and order.
