St. Edward’s Secondary School will officially launch its new Science-Technology‐Engineering‐Mathematics (STEM) Laboratory on Friday, 7 November 2025, at 10:00 a.m. on the school grounds.
The initiative underlines the school’s commitment to enhancing innovation, scientific inquiry and hands-on learning for its students.
The event will bring together members of the school community, stakeholders in education and invited guests as the institution celebrates the future of science and technology in education.
During the launch event, the new laboratory facilities will be officially unveiled. School leadership will outline how the space will be used for practical experiments, robotics clubs, computing tasks and other STEM-oriented activities.
STEM Education in Sierra Leone
In recent years, Sierra Leone has placed increasing emphasis on strengthening STEM education as part of its broader human-capital development agenda. The Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) and the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) have jointly invested in education innovation initiatives including a US$1.5 million programme aimed at improving learning outcomes across more than 170 schools.
Sierra Leone also validated its first National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy in 2023, which includes the revitalisation of STEM-based education and the development of a science culture in society.

On the ground, organisations such as EasySTEMSL and Develop Africa have been working with schools and teachers to deliver practical STEM training, equipping educators with science kits and building interactive classroom experiences.
The new laboratory at St. Edward’s thus aligns with national priorities for quality STEM teaching and learning.
