Sierra Leone Labour Congress Urges Government to Address Teachers’ Concerns Amid Nationwide Strike

The Sierra Leone Labour Congress (SLLC) has expressed solidarity with the Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU) as the union embarks on a nationwide strike over long-standing grievances with the government.

In a statement issued on September 8, 2025, the SLLC acknowledged that the industrial action—launched by its affiliate body, the SLTU—stems from unresolved issues first raised with the Government of Sierra Leone in November 2024. Despite ongoing engagements between both parties, the Congress noted with concern that government has yet to resolve the critical matters tabled by the teachers.

The SLLC emphasized that the failure to address the teachers’ demands comes at a critical time when Free Quality Education remains the government’s flagship program. “Government has not been able to address the mandatory issues raised by the Sierra Leone Teachers Union at a time like this when Free Quality Education is Government’s flagship programme,” the statement reads.

The Labour Congress therefore called on authorities to take urgent steps in resolving the impasse and ensuring an immediate resumption of classes across the country. “We call on Government to address the issues raised by the Sierra Leone Teachers Union for an immediate resumption of schools to continue promoting education for our children,” the SLLC urged.

The Congress also reaffirmed its support for the teachers, pledging to explore additional options in working with both government and the SLTU to find a lasting solution. “Long live workers’ solidarity!” the release concluded.
