The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has officially transitioned to a new leadership era, with Alhaji Manika Kamara formally assuming the role of President during a handover ceremony held at the Bintumani Hotel in Aberdeen, Freetown.
Kamara, who previously served as Secretary in the outgoing executive, was entrusted with the reins of the country’s foremost journalism body by outgoing President Ahmed Sahid Nasralla.
The event was attended by media professionals, civil society representatives, past and current SLAJ officials, development partners, and other stakeholders who came together to witness the symbolic transfer of leadership. In a show of continued support for the work of SLAJ, the Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, delivered a goodwill message during the ceremony.

She congratulated the new executive, highlighting the association’s long-standing role in defending media freedoms, promoting ethical standards in journalism, and ensuring journalists serve the public with integrity and accountability.
“The responsibility you bear goes beyond reporting news,” she said. “It contributes to shaping public discourse and reinforcing the democratic foundations of our nation.” She further encouraged the new leadership to remain adaptive and innovative in the face of modern challenges confronting the media, including disinformation, digital disruption, and threats to press freedom.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr also expressed her willingness to strengthen cooperation with SLAJ on shared goals such as decentralisation, climate resilience, civic awareness, and inclusive national development.

With Kamara now at the helm, observers anticipate a renewed focus on empowering journalists, defending press freedom, and embracing technological advancements in media practice.
His leadership is expected to steer SLAJ through a transformative period, guided by inclusivity, professional growth, and a strong commitment to national progress
