Sierra Leone Government Evacuates Diplomatic Staff and Students from Iran Amid Rising Tensions

The Government of Sierra Leone has announced the successful evacuation of its diplomatic personnel and citizens residing in the Islamic Republic of Iran, citing security concerns.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on Wednesday, 18th June 2025, a total of 36 individuals were safely evacuated and have arrived in Armenia.

The evacuees include all staff members at the Sierra Leone Embassy in Tehran as well as Sierra Leonean students living in Iran. The decision to evacuate followed a careful assessment of the deteriorating security situation in the country.

In a proactive move to maintain diplomatic functions and provide consular services, the Ministry also confirmed that a temporary task team has been deployed to Armenia.

The team, composed of embassy personnel, will handle residual administrative matters and continue monitoring the situation in Iran as it unfolds.

The Government assured the public that it remains committed to safeguarding the welfare of Sierra Leonean citizens abroad and is closely following developments in the region.

The Ministry expressed gratitude for the smooth coordination of the evacuation and reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of all Sierra Leoneans overseas.
