The National Union of Sierra Leonean Students in the Russian Federation (NUSS-RF) has expressed deep disappointment and frustration over the delayed payment of the annual stipend to students by the authorities in charge of Stipend disbursements within the framework of the government of Sierra Leone.
In a Press release dated 17th June they revealed that despite repeated assurances, since the academic year started last September, Sierra Leonean students in the Russian Federation are yet to receive their stipends, leaving them struggling to meet their basic academic and financial needs.
The stipend, which is intended to support students in their academic pursuits, has been a cornerstone of the government’s commitment to supporting higher education and human capital development.
However, the delay has caused undue suffering as Sierra Leonean students are already grappling with living expenses and other financial challenges like payments of accommodation, medical care and feeding. This financial challenge is currently causing starvation, health problems and inability to meet basic accommodation requirements.
They confirmed that since the start of the academic year in September they have held countless meeting discussions, sent numerous letters, reminders and other correspondence to all the authorities in charge of student welfare regarding the situation Sierra Leonean students are facing in Russia. Till date, no positive response has been received, and the academic year ends in a few weeks.
In light of the current circumstances, NUSS-RF is demanding that the government through the authorities in charge of student affairs takes immediate action to address this issue and provides a solution to ensure that students receive their stipends in a timely manner adding that they will continue to advocate through media agencies and subsequently conduct a peaceful protest until this issue is resolved and their members receive the compensation they are entitled to
