In the aftermath of the November 21 attempted coup in Sierra Leone, the Sierra Leone Correctional Service (SLCS) has intensified efforts to locate and apprehend inmates who escaped from lawful custody on November 26, 2023.

Collaborating with the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) and the community, the SLCS has made significant progress in capturing some escapees, while others have voluntarily returned to custody.

Despite these efforts, a notable number of escaped inmates remain at large since the breach of the Pademba Road, Male Reintegration, and Female Correctional Centres in Freetown. In response to the ongoing situation, the SLCS has declared a grace period, extending until March 20, 2024. In accordance with the SLCS Act 2014, any inmate failing to return within this stipulated timeframe will face additional sentencing.

The SLCS emphasizes that aiding or concealing the whereabouts of escaped inmates is strictly prohibited. Individuals found guilty of such actions will face legal consequences as per the law. To support the ongoing search operation, the public is encouraged to provide any information leading to the arrest of escaped inmates. The SLCS emphasizes that aiding or concealing the whereabouts of escaped inmates is strictly prohibited.
