VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Job title:                               Community Development Relations Officer 

No. of Positions: 01

Reports to:               CD Superintendent

Supervises:             n/a

Employer: Gola Rainforest Conservation LG (GRCLG)

Position Purpose

To provide channels of communication between the Gola Forest Edge Communities and the Gola Rainforest Conservation (GRC-LG), building sound relationships of mutual benefit towards improved participatory management and community protection of the Gola forest.

Responsibilities 

  • Establish and maintain effective communication between the communities and the GRC(LG) at all times
  • Facilitate dialogue and participation of the communities in planning, decision making, management and project activities of the Gola forest
  • Promote community participation in forest protection and enforcement activities 
  • Mediate and facilitate between communities and GRC(LG) staff where necessary to develop trust and resolve conflict
  • Contribute to the planning, co-ordination and implementation of capacity building and training of communities for forest management and related activities.
  • Provide information, guidance and assistance on sustainable community-based conservation and natural resource use and management
  • Provide information on institutional roles and methodology in conservation an document community institutions and bylaws 
  • Investigate reports of human-wildlife conflict in and around the Gola forest and develop mitigation activities to reduce this threat
  • Assess and monitor community based natural resource use
  • Monitor and evaluate community attitudes towards conservation, the Gola Rainforest National Park and GRC (LG)
  • Arrange local meetings, events and presentations to further the objectives of GRC (LG)
  • Develop local informer networks and monitoring and report on compliance with agreements
  • Work closely with other field-based staff operating in the same assigned area (Cocoa Extension Officers, VS&L Officers,  Agricultural Extension Officers and Research Technicians) to co-ordinate implementation effectively
  • Assist in the preparation of the Department operations plan and monthly work plans

Position Requirements (Essential)

  • A Sierra Leone national
  • At least a Higher Diploma in Community Development Studies / Rural Development Field or related discipline 
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in working with communities on community development and sustainable livelihoods
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to live and work in remote rural areas
  • Fluent in English, Mende and Krio
  • Driver’s licence for motorcycles
  • Excellent organization skills
  • Good social skills for working with remote local communities
  • Cultural, ethnic and gender sensitivity
  • Excellent inter-personal and communication skills
  • Ability to compile written reports and to deliver updates in meetings

Position Requirements (Desirable)

  • Ability to keep accurate and orderly records of work undertaken
  • Knowledge and experience of PRA and community empowerment techniques
  • Computer literate
