In an effort geared towards empowering youths and strengthen the poultry industry in Sierra Leone, Cluck-Cluck poultry farm has on Friday 1st July, 2022, launched operations in Mayoba Village, Masongbo, outskirts of Makeni.
Egg consumption in Sierra Leone is estimated at 200 million eggs annually. However, local production is still small, and is facing lots of challenges covering only 20% of the demand. The rest is covered by imports.
Cluck-Cluck believes in the potential of the poultry sector and has financed local poultry farming to increase their share of the market. With a total of 1,016 Chickens they believe it is a positive start in enhancing local content policy and government’s food security drive.
The Chief of Mayoba Village, Pa Baimakare Ankolo II, welcomed the project and acknowledged the tremendous effort of the pioneers behind the establishment of Cluck-Cluck poultry farm in Mayoba village. He added that it is indeed a step in the right direction for the employment of youths and the growth of the community as a whole. He assured that the community will take great care of the poultry and ensure that it becomes productive in the supply of eggs to neighboring villages and the country as a whole.
The anchor behind the establishment of cluck-cluck poultry farm in Mayoba village, Abdulrahman Dan Kargbo, acknowledged his utmost thanks and appreciation to the people of Mayoba village for embracing him as one of their own.
Abdulrahman Dan Kargbo went on to say that he has been into the field of agriculture and poultry business since he was three years old. He added that poultry is all about passion for him, as it’s something that gives him great joy and happiness.
He further said that supporting the poultry industry in Sierra Leone is a huge step in enhancing the government’s food security drive – as we live in a nation where there’s a huge gap in food security which has paved the way for economic backlash.
He underscored that the land on which the poultry farm stands was provided by the stakeholders of the Mayoba village, and it is a sign to show that they too are ready and well determined to work together for a developed community.
Abdulrahman Dan Kargbo affirmed that this move is not only about improving the livelihood of the village, but rather it is also geared towards competing with international traders in the poultry industry. He asserted that Local poultry farms only distribute 20% of products in the country, with little or no amount of exports being done over the years – and Sierra Leone depends entirely on imported poultry goods from other countries which has trampled on the productivity of the local poultry industry.
“I am well determined to work with local poultry farmers to ensure that the local poultry industry becomes a big boost to the government’s food security drive”, he said.
He concluded by calling on government stakeholders and private institutions to come onboard and help salvage the situation of low export rate in the farming sector. He urged the community people of Mayoba village to take great care of the project, as it does not only create job opportunity for the youths, but it’s also a profitable project that will transform the village as a whole.
The event climaxed with the commissioning of the Cluck-cluck poultry farm by Abdulrahman Dan Kargbo and stakeholders of the community, which followed by words of appreciation and encouragement from the youths who welcomed the project with open arms.
