Over Fake Degrees Saga ACC Takes U-Turn

By Alhaji U Njai

Interesting to see the 360 degrees turnaround by Sierra Leone’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) from initial resistance to investigate few individuals to a desire now to do a full-scale audit of all public institutions. This looks more like another diversionary tactics from addressing individuals and institutions with the problems. It would have been good to start with those in high places and the institutions involved in fake degrees and then cascade to other institutions. I’m just wondering the level of seriousness here to sanitize the system, given the level of resistance to do this at the onset. Now, instead of addressing the smaller scale of few individuals, ACC wants to embark on a more bigger scale investigation.

What capacity do they have as an institution to thoroughly undertake and vet all the credentials from all institutions? What other critical corruption investigations will suffer if all their resources are put towards investigating credentials of all public institutions. The biggest question to be asked is why the turnaround now from an initial resistance? And what will happen to the credibility of the ACC as an institution if nothing comes off from these investigations and those found wanting in the first place aren’t held accountable. We wait to see the outcome again.
