WHO Donates Essential Laboratory Supplies and PPE to Boost Sierra Leone’s Mpox Response

The World Health Organization (WHO) has delivered essential laboratory supplies and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) worth over $38,000 to Sierra Leone’s National Public Health Agency (NPHA) under the Ministry of Health to bolster the country’s response to Mpox.

The consignment includes genomics sequencing reagents, PCR kits capable of conducting 400 tests, Gene Xpert cartridges for 50 tests, and genomic sequencing kits for 45 tests, among other crucial supplies.

In addition, the PPE donation consists of gloves, gowns, aprons, face shields, biohazard waste bags, and infra-red thermometers—vital resources for healthcare workers at the frontline of disease control.Receiving the donation on behalf of the NPHA, Executive Director Prof.

Foday Sahr expressed gratitude to WHO for its continued support in strengthening Sierra Leone’s public health preparedness and response capacity. Key officials from both organizations attended the handover ceremony, underscoring the collaborative effort in tackling infectious disease outbreaks.

The event also served as a platform for discussions on the successes and challenges of the ongoing Mpox response. Officials deliberated on key aspects such as surveillance, Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE), and case management.

These discussions reinforced the importance of a coordinated and sustained approach to public health emergencies in Sierra Leone.WHO’s support comes at a critical time as health authorities continue to enhance disease surveillance and response mechanisms to mitigate the spread of Mpox in the country.
